The ideal assignment for me would be reporting on the satirizing of current events in the media, whether it be through fake news shows, regular sitcoms, or websites that offer a send-up of the news. Shows like The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, South Park, Family Guy, The Simpsons, and other staples in the pop television culture will offer priceless sources for the assignment. Oftentimes it is through satire that I can form an opinion on a current event. Satire will occasionally make me open my eyes and ask if a certain situation really makes sense or point out the flaws. The danger of this, however, is that when a topic is being made fun of there is always some sort of spin being put on the subject. If someone is going to take the time to satirize something, then they obviously have a problem with the topic or find flaws in it.
I would like to create a small speech to introduce my subject and then present clips of television shows or newspaper articles to drive my point home. I could possibly create some sort of power point for the class, showing my points and then mix in examples to enforce them. There are so many ways to present this type of project, I really look forward to starting it and ultimately offering it to the class for discussion.Thursday, September 13, 2007
